Instagram admits technology mistake over racist abuse

Instagram, the social media platform, has owned up to the error in its moderation of racist abuses suffered by three England players on the medium.

Following the loss to Italy at Euro 2020 final on Sunday, the Instagram pages of Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jardon Sancho, who missed their penalties, were flooded with vicious discriminatory messages and offensive emojis.


Concerns have been raised to the photo-sharing platform on why the offensive emojis were allowed under the pages of the black athletes.

Some users also stressed that they reported the posts but were informed in a standard message from the site that the comments did not violate rules.

In his reaction via a tweet, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, admitted that a mistake in the platform’s technology meant racist comments and emojis were not removed.

He thereafter added that the issues have been fixed.

“We have the technology to try and prioritise reports, and we were mistakenly marking some of these as benign comments, which they are absolutely not,” Mosseri wrote.

“The issue has since been addressed.

“Reports on these types of comments should [now] be reviewed properly.”

English authorities have been rounding up the perpetrators of these online abuses, with four people already arrested in relation to the case.
