EPL round-up: Ronaldo leads Man United to convincing victory as City lose at home
Cristiano Ronaldo scored one and assisted another as Manchester United won 3-0 at Tottenham in their English Premier League (EPL) game on Saturday.
Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford added further goals as a much-changed Ole Gunner Solskjaer side returned to winning ways following the humbling 5-0 humiliation against Liverpool last weekend.
Tottenham, with only two wins in the last six league matches, thought they’d taken the lead through Cristian Romero but the defender was offside while turning in a flicked ball off a corner kick.
Ronaldo gave United the lead on 39 minutes with a volley from an acute angle, finding the far corner from Bruno Fernandes’ lofted ball.
The 36-year-old Portuguese forward had a goal disallowed early in the second half before setting up Cavani with a through ball and the Uruguayan finished with aplomb to double United’s lead on 64 minutes.
Rashford, brought on for Ronaldo, added gloss to the result three minutes from the end, beating the offside trap before burying low into the bottom corner.
The win is Man United’s first in five league matches, and it takes them to fifth on the EPL table.
Ten-man Manchester City however suffered a rare defeat at their Etihad Stadium earlier in the day, with Crystal Palace humbling Pep Guardiola’s side 2-0. Wilfred Zaha and Connor Gallagher scored in either half to spoil Guardiola’s party on his 200th EPL match as City manager.
Chelsea, the league leaders, saw off stubborn Newcastle United 3-0 at St. James Park to open a three-point gap as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Brighton.
