A soldier of the 11th commando unit of the Democratic Republic of Congo army based in Nizi, Djugu territory, has killed a lady who declined his sexual advances.

The incident happened on Sunday, May 16, when the soldier shot the deceased at a close range, local sources said.

“All began because of a misunderstanding by two individuals. Unfortunately, the girl who was not seduced by the advances of the soldier used discourteous language at the soldier,” an eyewitness told HumAngle.

“Faced with the rude resistance of the girl, the soldier shot the girl who died on the spot.”

Lt. Jules Ngongo, the army spokesperson in Ituri, disclosed that the army has commenced investigation to know exactly what happened.

Meanwhile, another civilian was also killed the same day by a national army soldier in the locality of Ngazba still in the Djugu territory.

“It is deplorable. The killer is an element of the 32nd regiment. In our missions, we avoid taking lives but rather protect them. Unfortunately, the inevitable happened and this undisciplined element is on the run. We are searching for him,” said the army spokesperson who confirmed the second incident.

“These types of behaviours are not tolerated in the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo and would be sanctioned as has never happened before. Behind the operations, we must all remain disciplined and discipline is the mother of armies and the criteria of success within the armed forces.”

Several cases of murder committed by security forces have been reported in Djugu territory. These incidents happen at a time when the army is carrying out operations against armed groups following the state of siege declared in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces by the Congolese head of state, Felix Tshisekedi.
