Police Officers Remanded In Custody For Extorting Undergraduate

The Rivers State Police Command said five of its operatives who allegedly extorted N150,000 from an undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt risked dismissal and prosecution if found culpable.

The student, identified simply as Victor, had lamented how operatives of the disbanded Eagle Crack Unit extorted the said amount from him at gunpoint after they accosted him and his friend after accusing them of being Internet fraudsters.

A spokesman for the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, while updating journalists on the case, assured that the matter would not be swept under the carpet.

Omoni said the case had since been transferred from the police headquarters to the State Criminal and Investigation Department, adding that the officers were still in detention.

He said, “I was told that they (SCID) have written to their banks requesting statement of accounts and that has not been released to them. So, as soon as that it is done, we will narrow the matter down to the suspects as alleged.

“If they are not found culpable, they will be freed accordingly and made to resume duties, but where they are found culpable, they will be dismissed, de-kitted and charged to court.”
