Piers Morgan, Others Call For Meghan Markle To Lose Title After Speaking Out Urging People To Vote

Meghan Markle’s participation in a virtual voting registration event for Michelle Obama’s nonpartisan organization When We All Vote created a stir on social media Saturday with some calling for her to lose her title for allegedly violating royal protocol.

Markle’s participation is noteworthy because members of the British royal family are reportedly expected not to discuss politics, although the rule may not apply since the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry stepped back from their royal duties in January and no longer formally represent Queen Elizabeth.

Some celebrated Markle for taking a stand, including royal commentator Kate Williams who noted that other royals have discussed elections and political matters without it being a “terrible scandal” and podcast host Natasha Devon who said Markle receives an “entirely disproportionate” amount of criticism.

Others were critical, including journalist Piers Morgan and conservative London Assembly Member David Kurten who both tweeted she and Prince Harry should lose their Sussex titles and pundit Julia Hartley-Brewer who tweeted, “it’s not cancel culture, it’s a breach of their employment contract.”

Although Markle didn’t say who she is voting for in the presidential election, she said there is a lot of work to be done and a lot “at stake” and asked people to mobilize and vote to create the “change that we all need and deserve.”

Markle spoke out about attempts at voter suppression, saying “it's all the more reason we need each of you to be out there supporting each other, to understand that this fight is worth fighting, and we all have to be out there mobilizing to have our voices heard.”

“If you’re not going out there and voting, then you’re complicit,” Markle added, “If you’re complacent, you’re complicit.”
